The app

Six reasons to come aboard.

A feed that speaks your language.

Ashore, nobody knows what an anchor watch at 0200 feels like. Here, everybody does. Photos, video, polls and straight talk from crews on every kind of ship.

  • For you, Following, My ship and Latest
  • Like, comment, share and save
  • Master to messman, deck and engine
The Gangway feed with posts from seafarers

Your ship, live in your pocket.

Where she is, the next port and the hour you get there. The crew on board, the ship's own chat, and the number every seafarer knows by heart: days to sign-off.

  • Position, speed, next port and ETA
  • One chat for everyone signed on to her
  • The countdown to sign-off

Never lose a shipmate again.

Six months together, then everyone flies home and the crew is gone. Add the ships you served on and Gangway shows who sailed on her, and when.

  • Who sailed on her, for every ship you add
  • Follow each other and you are shipmates
  • See which ship they are on now
A list of everyone who sailed on a ship

Six hours ashore. Make them count.

Before the gangway is down you know the weather, the seafarer centre, where to find wifi and a decent meal, and what the last crew thought of the place.

  • Reviews written by crew, not tourists
  • Ships in port now, and those expected
  • Saved on your phone for when you are offline

Every ship has a story. Follow hers.

Your last ship. Your next one. The one your brother is on. Find any ship by name, watch her on the live map, and hear the moment she arrives or sails.

  • A live map of ships along the world's coasts
  • Your own fleet, private to you
  • Alerts when a ship arrives or sails

Let your family follow your ship home.

The hardest part of this job is the people waiting. Give them one code and they see where your ship is, when she is due, and the days until you walk through the door.

  • A notice when she arrives and when she sails
  • No more "where are you now?"
  • You decide who gets the code

  • First aboard. You get Gangway before the public launch. iPhone first, Android after.
  • A say in how she is built. Your feedback comes straight to us. Feedback we act on earns the Sea Trials badge, which nobody can get after launch.
  • Everything free while we test. Every Pro feature included.

Honours of the sea

Badges you cannot buy.

Crossing the line still means something. Your Sea Passport counts every mile and port call from the ship's real track, and awards the old honours the day you earn them.

Turn a badge over to see where it is earned. There is one more, for 100,000 nautical miles.

Who is aboard

One gangway. Everyone who crosses it.

For crew

Your ship, your crew, your ports, and a true record of every mile you sail. Free to join.

For families

One code from your seafarer, and you always know where the ship is and how many days are left.

For companies

Your ships and your crew are already here. Claim your company page and be found by the people who sail for you.

Safe by design

In war and piracy areas, Gangway never shares a ship's position from a crew member's phone.

A record that is real

Miles, port calls and badges come from the ship's actual track. Nobody can type them in.

Crew you can trust

A member's place on board is confirmed by matching their phone's position with the ship's own.

Questions

Before you sign on.

Is Gangway free?

Yes. Joining and using Gangway is free. An optional Pro plan comes later. Founding Members pay €49 once and have Pro for life.

When can I get it?

People on the early-access list get it first, before the public launch: iPhone first, Android after. We email you when your invitation is ready.

What is a Plank Owner?

The navy's name for the crew on board when a ship first enters service. The first 1,000 members of Gangway are Plank Owners, and the badge stays on their profile for good.

Who can see where my ship is?

Ships broadcast their own position, and that is public everywhere. Your phone adds to it only if you switch that on, and never in war or piracy areas. Your family sees your ship only if you give them your code.

Does it work on ship's internet?

It is built for it. On Board mode keeps data use low, port pages are saved on your phone, and what you write is sent when you are back in range.

Can I delete my account?

Yes, from inside the app, at any time. You can also download everything Gangway holds about you.
